This third collaboration of Ocaidich /Improvise! between Cèol is Craic and Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra (GIO) explored themes arising from the work of Margaret Fay Shaw (MFS) with specially invited guests.
Nerea Bello, Gillebride MacMillan and Mairi MacMillian presented Basque and Gaelic song inspired by MFS’s free-spirited journey from America to Canna, finding new connections between the two traditions. Poet Rona MacDonald performed new compositions inspired by the musical content, together with GIO whose work explored migration, transfer and transformation. Dan Shay’s inventive back projections combined MFS’s photographic art with film. The separate art forms crossed over in many ways, finding new interpretations and ways of thinking about ancient songs and traditions.
This unique concert was a celebration of the freedom of movement symbolised by birds and how distinct cultures can enrich each other.
