Ceòl ’s Craic was delighted to join forces again with Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra. The purpose of  our ‘OCAIDICH! / Improvise!’ collaboration is to stage an innovative event combining Gaelic song with experimental and  improvisational music. This year’s performance took traditional Gaelic pibroch singing as its jumping off point and we assembled an exciting and eclectic group of musicians to create a unique musical experience.

Margaret Stewart is a renowned Gaelic vocalist and a leading authority on pibroch singing.  We asked Margaret to select the ancient songs which provided the foundation of the performance and inspired the evening’s guest musicians to compose exciting new musical settings.

WHYTE are no strangers to approaching traditional Gaelic music in new and surprising ways. The duo opened proceedings with ambient interpretations of ‘Fàilte Dhruim Fionn’ and ‘Colla Mo Rùn’.

Harpist and composer Ailie Robertson contributed two stunning pieces inspired by the pibrochs ‘I Got a Kiss of the King’s Hand’ and ‘Till An Crodh Laochain’. Ailie’s performance was notable for her virtuoso electric harp playing and the inventive use of archive recordings.

Italian-born saxophonist and composer Christian Ferlaino led the brass section on his version of ‘Uamh An Oir’.

GIO mainstay and double bass maestro Una MacGlone provided an atmospheric composition based on ‘Piobaireachd Dhomhaill Duibh”.

Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra draws on a pool of musicians who combine free jazz, improvisation, classical, folk and rock music. For this event we were able to utilise the creative talents of an amazing array of performers. Instrumentation which is not usually linked with traditional Gaelic music created refreshing and bold backings for pibroch song.

Margaret Stewart, who is regarded by many as a pillar of the Gaelic traditional music scene, took obvious delight in moving out of her comfort zone to interact with this diverse group of talented and experimental performers.

M.C.s  John Cavanagh and Ishbel Murray thanked the capacity audience and invited them to reconvene for 2019’s ‘OCAIDICH!’

Bha Ceòl ’s Craic air leth toilichte a bhith air àrd-ùrlar uair eile le Orcastra Òcaidichean Ghlaschu. B’ e adhbhar ar co-obrachaidh le ‘ÒCAIDICH! / Improvise!’ tachartas ùr-ghnàthach a chur air adhart a bha a’ cothlamadh òrain Ghàidhlig le ceòl deuchainneach agus òcaideach.  Bha òrain Ghàidhlig co-cheangailte ri ceòl mòr na pìoba aig teis-meadhain gnìomhadh na bliadhna-sa agus thug sinn buidheann roghainneach brosnachail de luchd-ciùil còmhla airson tachartas ciùil gun choimeas a chruthachadh.

Tha Maighread Stiùbhart na seinneadair ainmeil Gàidhlig agus na prìomh ùghdarras air òrain co-cheangailte ri ceòl mòr na pìoba. Dh’iarr sinn air Maighread na h-òrain àrsaidh a thaghadh a bhiodh aig bunait a’ ghnìomhaidh agus a bhrosnaicheadh an luchd-ciùil air aoigheachd gu rèiteachaidhean ciùil ùra agus brosnachail a choileanadh.

Chan eil WHYTE nan srainnsearan do bhith a’ làimhseachadh ceòl traidiseanta Gàidhlig ann an dòighean ùra agus iongantach. Dh’fhosgail an dithis an seat aca le mìneachaidhean iom-chuairteach de ‘Fàilte Dhruim Fionn’ agus ‘Colla Mo Rùn’.

Chluich an clàrsair agus sgrìobhaiche ciùil Ailie Robertson dà phìos mìorbhaileach a bha air an gintinn tron dà cheòl mòr ‘Fhuair mi Pòg o Làimh an Rìgh/I Got a Kiss of the King’s Hand’ agus ‘Till An Crodh Laochain’. Bha gnìomhadh Ailie air leth a thaobh a h-ealantas air a’ chlàrsaich dhealainich agus a cleachdadh innleachdail air clàraidhean tasglannach.

Stiùir an cluicheadair sagsafòn agus an sgrìobhaiche ciùil Eadailteach, Christian Ferlaino, an earrann phràise den orcastra le a thionndadh fhèin air ‘Uaimh an Òir’.

Thug Una MacGlone, am prìomh chluicheadair air a’ bheus dhùbailte ann an GIO dhuinn coimeasgachd smaoineachail stèidhichte air ‘Pìobaireachd Dhòmhnaill Dhuibh”.

Tha Orcastra Òcaidichean Ghlaschu a’ tarraing à buidheann de luchd-ciùil a bhios ag amalachadh jazz saor, òcaideachadh, clasaigeach, tuath-cheòl agus ceòl roc. Airson an tachartais seo, bha sinn comasach air feum a dhèanamh de na tàlantan cruthachail aig raon iongantach de luchd-gnìomhaidh. Chruthaich ionnsramaideachd nach eil gu h-àbhaisteach co-cheangailte ri ceòl traidiseanta Gàidhlig, cùl-taic do na h-òrain pìobaireachd a bha ùrachail agus dàna.

Bha e follaiseach gun do chord e ri Maighread Stiùbhart a tha air a meas le mòran mar bhana-ghaisgeach saoghal ciùil traidiseanta Gàidhlig, gluasad air falbh bho a suidheachadh àbhaisteach gus eadar-obrachadh leis a’ bhuidheann eadar-mheasgte seo de luchd-gnìomhaidh thàlantach agus dheuchainneil.

Thug fear-an-taighe John Cavanagh agus bean-an-taighe Iseabail Mhoireach taing don luchd-èisteachd agus cuireadh dhaibh tilleadh gu ‘ÒCAIDICH!’ 2019.
